Obituary

Modesta Gonzales, 87, passed away on February 18, 2025, while on a trip doing what she loved in Reno, Nevada. Born on August 1, 1937, in Sinton, Texas, Modesta dedicated much of her career to the Central Kitchen for CCISD, working at Driscoll Middle School and Miller High School, where she played a vital role in ensuring students were well-fed and cared for.

Beyond her work, Modesta had a deep love for travel and adventure. Alongside her husband, Abram Gonzales, she was an active member of the Optimist Club, a volunteer organization that took them across Texas for various conventions. Her passion for exploring new places extended far beyond state lines—she never turned down a trip to Las Vegas or Coushatta to try her luck at the slots. The highlight of her travels was a month-long journey to Australia with her husband to visit his brother, an experience she cherished deeply.

Modesta's warmth and generosity were evident in every aspect of her life. Known for her quick wit, infectious laugh, and outspoken nature, she would do anything for her family and friends, always ensuring they were well taken care of—especially when it came to food. Cooking was one of her greatest joys; who doesn't remember tamale season—no work, no tamales! And no meal was ever complete without a fresh stack of tortillas made with love.

She found strength and community in her faith as a devoted member of Saint Theresa Catholic Church and later, Christ the King Catholic Church. She was also a longtime member of the Guadalupanas, a charitable women's group dedicated to promoting devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Modesta is survived by her children: Arturo (Michelle) Gonzales, Socorro (Jeff) Brand, and Guadalupe Gonzales; grandchildren: Nicholas Brand, Arturo Gonzales Jr., Stephanie Gonzales, Samantha (Lucio) Gonzales, Adrian (April) Gonzales, and Olivia Gonzales; great-grandchildren: Jasmine Gonzales, Jayden Gonzales, Jeremiah Gonzales, Mateo Gonzales, Salem Journey Brown, and Ivan Gonzales; as well as seven brothers and sisters and many beloved nieces and nephews and so many who called her friend.

She was preceded in death by her husband Abram Gonzales; parents Adrian Garcia Sr. and Felicita Torres; and brother Adrian Garcia Jr.
