Mary Fox Stearns, 79, of Corpus Christi, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026.
Born on December 4, 1946, in Fort Worth, Texas, Mary lived a life defined by service, compassion, faith, and an unwavering commitment to her family and community. She made history as the first female letter carrier in Corpus Christi, breaking barriers and opening doors for future generations of women in the workforce.
When Mary welcomed her only child, John, into the world, she made the decision to leave her position with the Postal Service and devote herself fully to raising her son. In doing so, she became much more than a mother to one child—she became a mother figure, mentor, and advocate for countless children throughout the community.
Mary poured her energy into supporting young people and their families through years of volunteer service. She served as a catechism teacher at Holy Cross Catholic Church, a room mother, and a Den Mother for Scouting. She was elected President of the PTA at Oak Park Elementary School, Driscoll Junior High School, and Roy Miller High School. Her leadership extended throughout Corpus Christi as she served on the City Council PTA Board, the St. Theresa Parish School Board, as President of Westside Little League, and as President of the Miller Athletic Booster Club. Her influence touched the lives of countless children, parents, teachers, and community members.
After her years of dedication to family and volunteer work, Mary returned to the workforce and enjoyed a career as a teller with Kleberg Bank, where she was known for her kindness, warmth, and genuine care for others.
Mary was a devoted member of the Unity Spiritual Center of Corpus Christi, where her faith continued to guide and inspire her throughout her life.
She is survived by her son, John Stearns; daughter-in-law, Susannah Stearns; grandchildren, Christopher Stearns, John Henry Stearns, and Laird Stearns; and her brother, David Fox. She leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication that will live on through her family and all whose lives she touched.
A memorial service celebrating Mary's life will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Mary will be remembered for her pioneering spirit, her generous heart, and her lifelong devotion to children, family, faith, and community. Her impact was felt by generations, and her memory will continue to inspire all who knew and loved her.
