John Richard Polen, born on July 22, 1953, in Houston, Texas, passed away on January 31, 2026, in Orange Grove, Texas. He was 72 years old.

John led a life marked by service, faith, and resilience. After graduating from the University of Concordia River Forest, he dedicated himself to both his country and his community. He served honorably in the United States Navy and later became a lay minister within the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), offering spiritual guidance and support to those around him.

A man of strong convictions and practical wisdom, John was known for his deep interest in survival preparedness. His passion for self-reliance reflected his thoughtful nature and commitment to being ready for any challenge life might bring.

John's life was also shaped by enduring love and family bonds. He is survived by his wife Evelyn Polen; daughter Michelle Swalley; sister Becky; granddaughters Haley and Rachel; grandson David; and stepsons Brian and Richard Funkie. Each of them carries forward a part of his legacy.

He was preceded in death by his father Gerald R. Polen; Mother Julia Polen (née Blessing); sisters Barbara and Kathy; brother Jim; second wife Marlene D. Polen; and daughter Jamie.

John's memory will live on through those who knew him and loved him. May his life of service, faith, and preparedness continue to inspire all who remember him. A burial will be held on February 23, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery 9974 I- 37.
